Along Bragg Hill Rd. this afternoon I found one of the biggest sparrow flocks I have seen this fall. From the car I flushed wave after wave of birds, with two groups that looked like they numbered more than 50 individuals each. Almost all juncos, but a few others still mixed in. There easily could have been 300+ birds total. On a side note, the approaching weather system could make for some good birding tomorrow. This radar map shows what I think is a large movement of migrants--although it is updated frequently so might not show much in an hour or two. http://weather.rap.ucar.edu/radar/displayRad.php?icao=KGYX&prod=bref1&bkgr=black&endDate=20121018&endTime=-1&duration=0 Spencer Hardy Norwich, VT Elmer Brook gully area, Windsor, US-VT Oct 18, 2012 4:26 PM - 4:36 PM Protocol: Stationary 9 species Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata) 1 heard only, several call notes Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerina) 2 Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) 2 White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) 5 Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) 200 Very conservative count, all throughout one of the yard This report was generated automatically by eBird v3 (http://ebird.org/vt)
