At 5:30 this evening, standing at my kitchen window, gazing out with no particular intent, there suddenly appeared several small birds darting into the twin birches some 10 yards from the house. The birds (10-to-12) were very fidgety. Warblers? Kinglets? The conditions hardly could have been worse; gray, damp, late light. I got a confirmed yellow-rumped. Hard to miss its rear when it is displayed. But the others? Their mannerisms certainly seemed to be yellow-rumped like, but how could I confirm under the conditions? Meanwhile, frustration. So close to something memorable, yet so far. Whom among us has not experienced that? The one(s) that got(get) away.
