No, but you do need to register Word for Japanese with the MS Language Register for the tools to appear. It's a little app inside the Microsoft Office 2011 folder > Additional Tools > Microsoft Language Register. 

Then the icons will appear on the Home tab in the Font section. 

It's also interesting to note that the phonetic guide tool now preloads Pinyin for Chinese on the Mac now. It used to only do that on Windows, so it's handy for Chinese instructors, too!
