As long as you have a mic and a set of speakers plugged into a machine, PowerPoint gives you the option to record audio inside of the program.  In PowerPoint 2010, click on the Insert tab, click on the downward-pointing arrow underneath the Audio button (far right) and select Record Audio… Once you record your audio, it will automatically be inserted on the current slide as a gray speaker icon.

Selecting the gray speaker icon will give you access to a set of Audio Tools that will appear as an additional tab (far right in the menu) in PowerPoint.  From here, you can trim the audio, adjust the volume, add simple fade and fade out effects, etc.
