1) The second Windsor County bird walk as a part of the 2011 Vermont County Birding Quest series was held late this afternoon in Wilder, VT. At the Wilder Dam on the Connecticut River nine participants enjoyed extended views of two mature Bald Eagles, first while they perched and then later in flight; these eagles were in both Vermont and New Hampshire. Land birds found in Wilder in the late afternoon included Rock Pigeons, American Crows, Black-capped Chickadees, a Tufted Titmouse, a White-breasted Nuthatch, European Starlings, and a female Northern Cardinal. Waterbirds comprised six ducks seen flying in the distance towards dusk. 2) The third bird walk in this series is to be held from 8:30 to 10:30 AM on Saturday March 5, 2011, starting in White River Junction and continuing with a second part in Wilder. Chris Rimmer is to lead. This walk is free and open to the public. Children accompanied by an adult are welcome. Bring binoculars and scopes if available and dress warmly. Participants should be prepared to walk as much as 1.5 miles over fairly level ground. This walk will not be held in case of steady rain or hazardous driving conditions. Road instructions for Mar. 5: Take Route 4 eastward in White River Junction towards New Hampshire. Immediately before reaching the Route 4 bridge crossing the Connecticut River, turn right into the Listen parking lot which at 8:30 AM will be the starting point for this walk. Additional directions will be provided there for continuing on to Wilder.
