For all who enjoy birding at Foley Point on the south side of the Ledyard Bridge in Norwich, the idea of preserving the point as a public park will come before the Norwich select board on Wednesday, June 24th, as an agenda item to be discussed by the board with input from the public. The land, as many of you know, is a gathering place for waterfowl, song birds, and migratory birds, from loons and herons to orioles and goldfinches. It offers a wonderful view down the Connecticut River and by foot a way around Blood Brook inlet. Many regard this land's best use as a passive, low-impact destination for birders, walkers, bicyclists, and canoeists, for the quiet enjoyment of nature and history. That's what I and others will propose as a concept to the select board on Wednesday. Vermont statute gives authority to the select board to layout any public park but it all starts with an idea and public input. Please attend and offer your suggestions. If you can't attend, please send an email, as others have done, and let the select board know your feelings about this very peaceful and lovely river point owned by the town of Norwich, and which we hope to preserve as a passive public park.
