At the conference, some of you told me that your >lab fees were $50, or $75.00, or so. [...] As I heard some of the conversations about lab fees, I realized that we don't charge language students a lab fee. Other labs on campus (e.g., chemistry, photography, etc) do have fees, but using the lab is part of the students' weekly activities, and lab attendance is mandatory as per their syllabi. In the case of those institutions where a lab fee is in place for the language lab...is attendance to the lab mandatory? Is it an integral part of the syllabus? I was thinking that, if the lab is just available for extra work or remedial work on a self-access basis, or if the lab is integrated in the syllabus for some classes but not others, we couldn't really charge a lab fee, because not all students would make equal use of those facilities. Any comments on the subject of reasons/justifications to charge a fee will be welcome.
