I don't know that I would recommend it as a language learning tool. It requires a fair amount of training, and even after several months of using it, it still makes mistakes in translating what I say into text. That means if somebody is using it every once in awhile, they aren't likely to get very good results. Additionally, if you're someone who's accustomed to typing, learning how to dictate is quite an adjustment - you have to get used to pronouncing your punctuation marks, and also learn how to select text with your voice to make corrections if Dragon transcribes something incorrectly (and get used to the fact that certain words like "select" are interpreted as commands and won't be transcribed as text unless you dictate them exactly right.) That said, it's something that might be of use for students in an advanced language class who already have pretty good pronunciation in the target language and patience to learn how to work with the dictation software. I have two different, but related, questions: 1. We are thinking of acquiring a Speech Recognition software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking. Has anyone experimented with it? Pros and Cons? 2. We are looking to acquire a machine for transcription (with foot controls), and one that works with digital files (not cassette-tapes). Has anyone found a good, digital, one that they are satisfied with? Thanks for your input! And Happy Holidays!
