At Mount Holyoke College, we are using WebCAPE with some of the larger
language departments, a basic online form submission for Latin, and
individual appointments with faculty for some of the
less-commonly-taught languages.

The Internet-based exams are done by students online prior to their
arrival on campus--it's assumed that the honor code covers any issues
with cheating, and questions about whether or not a placement is
correct are handled by faculty meeting with the student once they've
arrived.

However, some of our departments are also beginning to consider
changing the current procedures.

For anyone shopping around for tests, I would highly recommend you
look at the Minnesota Language Proficiency Assessments (MLPA)
developed by CARLA (the Center for Advanced Research on Language
Acquisition) at the University of Minnesota:

http://www.carla.umn.edu/assessment/MLPA.html

For anyone thinking of developing their own new assessment, CARLA's
Virtual Assessment Center and Resources provide a lot of very useful
guidelines and information.
