*Vermont *Statewide 1.7.07 *VT0403.06 This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for January 7, 2008 covering the period December 31, 2007 - January 6, 2008. Highlights this week include a RED-NECKED GREBE seen at the north end of Shelburne Point on 1/1, a pair of CANVASBACKS in breeding plumage in Shelburne Bay last seen 1/6, the continued presence of a PINE WARBLER in Middlebury on 1/1, an unconfirmed report of a DICKCISSEL in Poultney 1/2 and a HOARY REDPOLL in Waitsfield 12/31, 1/2 and 1/3 and in Saxton's River 1/3. There were 5 COMMON LOON sightings on New Year's Day, 1 at Shelburne Beach, 1 at Basin Harbor CC and 3 at the Burlington waterfront. A GREAT BLUE HERON was sighted on Grand Isle on 1/4. A lone SNOW GOOSE was seen on Shelburne Bay on 1/5. Five LESSER SCAUP were spotted in Shelburne on 1/1. A large flock of approximately 2,000 COMMON GOLDENEYES were observed in White Bay in Panton on 1/1. At least 9 BALD EAGLES were spotted at one time on the ice north of Crown Point bridge on 1/2. BELTED KINGFISHERS were seen at the following locations this week: 1/1 - Addison, Button Bay, Charlotte (2), Ferrisburg, Randolph; 1/2 - Brandon; 1/3 - Pittsford. Flocks of 20 - 60 PINE GROSBEAKS and COMMON REDPOLLS continue to be common throughout the state.. This weekly Vermont birding report is a service of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies (VCE).
