2) 2007 NFLRC Summer Institute Developing Useful Evaluation =
Practices=20
in College Foreign Language Programs
University of Hawai=91i at Manoa, Honolulu, HI
May 28 - June 6, 2007
http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/prodev/si07d/
This NFLRC Summer Institute is designed to help college foreign=20
language administrators and teachers engage in useful, practical, and=20
effective program evaluations to meet a variety of purposes. It takes=20
seriously the values, goals, and constraints that characterize college=20=
language programs and will provide language educators with a=20
user-oriented approach to developing evaluations that maximize benefits=20=
for language learners and teachers, while minimizing potential negative=20=
consequences. It will also provide participants with tools and=20
strategies for making program evaluation a systematic and consistently=20=
useful component of their FL departments.
The Institute will be run by Dr. John M. Norris (UH Dept. of Second=20
Language Studies), an expert in language program evaluation and=20
assessment. Activities over the 9-day institute will include lectures=20=
and demonstrations, in-depth analyses of practical evaluation examples,=20=
invited guest speakers (language evaluation experts), social events,=20
and extensive hands-on development and discussion of evaluation plans,=20=
procedures, and instruments for immediate use in the participants=92=20
specific program settings.
This workshop is intended for foreign language administrators and=20
teachers who are directly responsible for program evaluations in their=20=
foreign language departments. It assumes no prior grounding in program=20=
evaluation theory or practice, but it requires a willingness to help=20
increase evaluation capacity in college FL education. In order to=20
maximize the impact of this event across U.S. colleges, participants=20
will be purposefully selected to represent diverse FL program types,=20
based on size, languages taught, geography, and institutional status.=20
Some financial support is available to all participants in the NFLRC=20
Summer Institute, on a competitive and space-limited basis. Summer=20
Institute participants will be expected to participate in the 2007 ADFL=20=
Summer Seminar West, which will directly follow the workshop on the=20
University of Hawai=91i at Manoa campus.

deadline - February 15, 2007), visit our website at=20
