Dear Members - as far as I know there are no reconstructions of Mohe or any other northern language, except a few guesses at 'Xiongnu' words. There are a few identified Khitan words in Jurchen. The Khitan script is still only partially deciphered, mainly on the basis of Khitan transcriptions of Chinese words and vice versa, but from what can be gathered, some Khitan words look like their Mongolic equivalents, some look a bit like their Tungusic equivalents, but most identified words do not look like either. I recently wrote on Jurchen and Khitan in the Festschrift for Giovanni Stary, but I am not sure if it has been formally published yet. I have not yet seen it. Daniel Kane >>> [log in to unmask] >>> A recent discussion with Wei Yu Tan about his research on Kitan reconstruction, and what appear to be a surprising (to me) degree of Jurchen elements, has raised the question for me of how much work has been done on northern Manchurian languages before the 12th century Jurchens. Are there reconstructions or theoretical descriptions of Mohe? Just wondering how old these influence might be in Kitan.
