What our instructors like best about Smartboards, apart from the ease of use, is the terrific FREE downloadable software that comes with them. The software allows you not only to save your entire Smartboard session as a PDF file for easy transmittal to your students, but also has a feature that will record the session as it's being taught. The software is constantly updated with new features--the company actually recruits teachers to come to its site and help decide what needs to be added. Smartboards come in several different flavors. In our language center, we decided on a rear projection board that can operate independently of our podium controls. It has its own on-board computer and VCR/DVD, and can be rolled around the room. Since our center is wireless and is constantly being set up in different configurations, we've found that we can hold more than one type of class at a time--a discussion group can be in one end of the room using the Smartboard while a second group can be working in the other end using the regular projection system. I have not used a PolyCom board, but I've seen them demonstrated. To the extent that I could tell from the demonstration, Smart Tech has it all over Polycom when it comes to using interactive white boards for higher ed. We are doing some upgrades in the Language Lab to better support 2nd year instruction. We will be investing in 2-4 interactive white boards. Polyvison Webster boards are the only boards I have experience with. Can anyone who uses interactive white boards in their labs please let me know what your experience has been, preferred makes and models, etc. Joseph ------------------------------------------------------------------ Joseph Kautz Academic Technology Specialist - Stanford Language Center Meyer 280B - Stanford, CA 94305-3101 - (650) 725-1615 That's all there is; Nothing more than you can feel now.
