They'll record into MP3 directly, as well as MP2, WAV and BWF. In a smaller format (cigarette pack size), we use the Sony MZ-NHF800 minidisc recorder. It uses inexpensive media, and gets great sound quality. I'm not wild about Sony's SonicStage software, which is the only thing that I know of that will read the proprietary filetype, .hmd (I think). It's clunky, and "registers" itself to one machine so that you can only use a single workstation with a given minidisc. Once you've got the hang of it, it's not difficult to batch convert recorded audio to WAV, and thence to whatever distribution format you want to use. Hope this is useful, a. Andrew F. A variety of compressions (besides just WMA) would be nice, but not necessary. A quick search of the LLTI archives turned up a query or two on this subject from 2 years ago, but nothing much by way of responses. In the days of webcasting, I'm assuming/hoping that someone out there has some longterm (i.e., at least a week or two?) experience with such recorders by now that they could share with the list. Thanks in advance to any and all for their advice. Mark Lauersdorf P.S. To those who helped in my earlier DVD burning queries, I will get an official response and thanks message back to the list once I settle in to my new position. *********************************************** LLTI is a service of IALLT, the International Association for Language Learning, and The Consortium for Language Teaching and Learning (http://consortium.dartmouth.edu).
