A smoother option for me is to browse to http://www.foolsworkshop.com/ptou/ and use their great utility which takes text such as "zhong1guo2 shi4 shi4jie4 zui4 hao3 de guo2jia1" as input and returns both Unicode pinyin (zh=cnggu$C3=> sh$C3$AC sh$C3$ACji$C3(R) zu$C3$AC h<<eo de gu$C3=>jifA) and corresponding text including hex values in HTML format (zhōngguó shì shìjiè zuì hǎo de guójiā) as output. Just enter the text you want to have tone marked, and copy the output into your document.
