It is with sadness that I share the news of Dr. Rubi Rubrecht's passing after an unexpected illness. Rubi was a professor of German and German applied linguistics with the University of Regina beginning in 1966 (when it was still the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus) but many members of IALLT and LLTI will remember Rubi from his years as the director of the Language Resource Centre (then Electronic Learning Centre) at the University of Regina (from 1972 to 1992). During his time with the ELC, Rubi brought the lab through the years of reel to reel audio and into the years of CALL. Rubi was not only a participant and presenter at many established conferences, but during his years with the ELC, Rubi worked hard to establish a CALL community in Saskatchewan, including helping to organize local conferences. Rubi retired from the University of Regina in December 2001 and was granted professor emeritus in April 2002. Since his retirement Rubi and his wife, Penthes, established the Prairie Language Centre where he actively continued teaching. Rubi will be missed by many. The following is the notice which appeared in the Regina LeaderPost on Saturday, September 25, 2004: RUBRECHT_ Rubi (Werner Hermann) Rubrecht passed away peacefully in Calgary on September 20th, 2004 at the age of 64. Rubi's family, friends, colleagues and students will always hold onto his incredible passion towards learning and the enjoyment he took in sharing knowledge with others. Rubi was a kind, loyal and generous man, who faced adversities in his life as any hero would. Rubi will always be alive in our thoughts and in our hearts. Penthes, Markus, and Dominic would like to thank their family, friends, and neighbours for their support during the past few weeks. In lieu of flowers, please treat yourself to a night out with family and friends in celebration of Rubi's life. A memorial will be held on October 17th at 2 pm in Salon B at the Queensbury Convention Centre. Thanks to Jacques Funeral Home in Calgary and Speers Funeral Chapel in Regina for their services. Rubi, your generous spirit and zest for teaching and learning will remain an inspiration. Thank you for touching our lives.
