If so, a good solution is to use the United States International keyboard in conjunction with the Visual Keyboard, which is a free download from Microsoft. The US International keyboard retains the QWERTY key assignments but uses some of the punctuation keys to insert accented characters. The US International keyboard can be used on its own, but if you combine it with the Visual Keyboard you get a pop-up virtual keyboard mapped to the US International keyboard. Just click on the characters you want and they are inserted into your text. Unfortunately, not all programs accept character input from the Visual keyboard. You'll need to try it out to find out.
