We will focus on the human-computer interaction elements of learning a language online. The general goal of the book is to discuss the basis of a broad framework for the development and management of CALL environments, enriched with contributions from domains as diverse as education, information systems, psychology, sociology, linguistics, artificial intelligence, e-learning and many others. The book will put the emphasis on the user (learner) and propose methodologies, strategies and design approaches for designing interfaces that facilitate a user-centered design approach and focus to CALL The target audience ------------------- University educators and educators in general; university administrators; researchers; librarians, teachers of foreign languages, e learning and CALL system managers and designers. Recommended Topics ------------------ Recommended topics include but are not limited to the following * Introduction: Introductory chapters to the topic of user-centred design of CALL * Analysis: Ethnographic (virtual, phase-to-phase) studies of CALL courses; Requirement solicitation for CALL courses; Analysis of Social and Cultural Perspectives of CALL; Development or use of novel analysis methodologies for CALL; Analysing the social structure of CALL learning communities. * Design: Learning Theories for CALL (e.g. constructivism, behaviourism, social constructionism) and how these can be linked to the design of specific learning objects; Examples of successful user-centered designed CALL courses; How to develop interfaces to facilitate different learning styles for online CALL; Design of Educational Computer Platforms for CALL; Design Scenarios for CALL * Evaluation: Student support and assessment mechanism in the era of networked CALL; Human Factors, Usability/Accessibility evaluation of CALL; Evaluating the effect of design elements (e.g. multimedia) as motivation factors in learning a foreign language online SUBMISSION PROCEDURE -------------------- Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before August 10, 2004, a 2-5 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by August 31, 2004 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by November 15, 2004. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a blind review basis. The book is scheduled to be published by Idea Group, Inc., publisher of the "Idea Group Publishing," "Information Science Publishing," and "IRM Press" imprints in 2005.
