I had some techies from our Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology, create a website (they used "Dreamweaver" software), with home pages for each language, and by course (e. g., Spanish 101, 102, 201, 202, etc). Our system is all iMac, and we used iTunes to convert the files from the AIFF format which most CDs that came with the books use, into mp3s for the site. (We had to digitize those that were still only on analog tapes!) We then uploaded the converted mp3s , and linked them to the pages. The students log into the website (accessible only on campus), select a language, a course, a chapter, and then select each audio track as they desire. For our ten languages, it currently takes about 8-9 GB of space on the hard drive, a G-4 PowerMac. [I placed a tutorial on this on our website, in the "Admin Info" section, under "Intro to the LLC."] As long as you take "reasonable and prudent" means to safeguard these files, like having access limited by keeping the files/server behind the campus firewall, and where students must enter user-specific access numbers (we use student ID numbers) as the portal through which access is granted, you're OK, or so the legal people have said. The problem comes when you get a new set of CDs in and have to redo all the links as well as upload the new files.
