We have given the Mac centric instructors a year in which to choose new apps for Mac OS X, as OS X doesnt support hypercard, and we have decided to get away from legacy apps. We decided to continue support on 8 OS 9 Imacs for one more year. If you absolutely feel the need to support these apps in OS X, http://www.runrev.com/ is a possible solution if you are willing to do some work on the Hypercard stacks. For example, there is "French Pronunciation Tutor," "Spanish Pronunciation Tutor," "Spanish Verb Tutor", etc. These are HyperCard-based. They run fine on older Macs running System 9, but on new eMacs they no longer run properly in the Classic mode. The audio is choppy, and the pacing is off. When you listen to a list of words, for example, the intervals are irregular, and sometimes the sounds seem truncated. Does anyone have a fix or an explanation for this? Classic seems to be running the old Hypercard programs in a different way than System 9 did. Some old-timers (including yours truly) still like providing a few of these programs, but the new machines really diminish the learning experience. David Pankratz Loyola University Chicago
