It requires less bandwidth. There is also no limit to the movie length. I stream videos that are nearly 3 hours long with no problems. You can download the Darwin streaming server from the Apple website for free. There are Mac, Solaris, RedHat Linux, and Windows 2000/2003 Server versions available at http://developer.apple.com/darwin/projects/streaming/. (I think you will need to sign up as an Apple developer but this is free as well.) Of course, they will need to be in either QuickTime or Mpeg-4 format to stream. There is also a progressive download feature that will help deter hiccups in the playback. Your primary concerns will be bandwidth and bit rate. Simply, the higher the bit rate, the more bandwidth is required. A 56K modem connection is difficult to stream to. You will need to encode the video at a very low bit rate for these types of connections. Cable modems are much easier. Encoding tools like Cleaner 6 (Mac)/ Cleaner XL (windows) have preset settings for both of these types of connections. Cleaner is a decent tool but a little pricey. For the ultra cheap solution, QuickTime Pro has editing and encoding capabilities for the ultra cheap price of $30.00. As far as PowerPoint and Presenter, I think you can just put the files in your web folder and let them be downloaded. Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. What format??? What is the maximum length of time for a 56K modem user, cable modem user????? I don't have access to a streaming server, so I will be uploading the videos to a web page. What about PowerPoint (with audio and video) or Presenter on the web- to create a learning module??? Thanks for your input. Janis Smith Reconstructionist Rabbinical College [log in to unmask]
