The Lauder Institute seeks a dynamic and creative individual to fill its position of Director for the Language and Cultural Perspectives Program. The position is available from October, 2003. Position Description This position has overall responsibility for managing the Language and Cultural Perspectives Program for the 8 currently offered languages in this joint-degree MBA/MA program. The position reports to the Managing Director, and it supervises the Academic Program Coordinator, all full- and part-time language faculty, and other part-time graduate assistants, interns, and student workers. As a member of the Institute$E2s senior staff, the position also has responsibility for student advising, student committees and activities, and special events. Responsibilities: · Manage, assess, and develop innovative, advanced professional language and culture program in 8 language areas: currently, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish · Conduct periodic program review and devise and implement new programs and strategies, as required · Negotiate contracts and serve as liaison to co-hosting institutions for all summer immersion sites · Recruit, train, and supervise faculty for the 8 academic-year programs and country director/coordinators for the 8 summer immersion programs; additionally, recruit, train and supervise tutors, as needed · Monitor faculty teaching and curriculum (each faculty member teaches 2-4 sections); work with faculty to develop appropriate curriculum materials and plan monthly seminars and the annual mini-immersion · Conduct and guide language faculty in research to validate, enhance, and update the Lauder language teaching model and curriculum · Chair and plan the agenda for the biweekly meetings of the Lauder Language Council · Oversee the assessment and certification of students$E2 language proficiency; develop assessment tools for reading and writing, in addition to oral skills · Meet regularly with student groups and committees to review and monitor the academic-year and summer immersion language program · Advise students throughout their two-year program on language-related and proficiency development issues · Monitor students$E2 language learning and progress toward graduation-level proficiency; develop individualized strategies for those in jeopardy · Develop orientation program for the Language and Cultural Perspective Program for incoming classes; assist in the development of other orientation programs and, in particular, the cross-cultural training part of the program for incoming classes · Advise the Associate Director for Recruiting and Admissions on language-related issues; during the admissions process, assist in assessing the viability of select candidates and meet with prospective candidates as appropriate · Work with the Associate Director for External Affairs to enhance the impact of students$E2 corporate visit and internship experiences on their language proficiency development · Work closely with Institute leadership in periodic review of the overall Lauder program , re-evaluation of its mission and goals, and evaluation of the effectiveness of its existing program; serve as a major player in the creation and development of new programs · Participate in the procurement and management of grants in support of curriculum and program development, faculty professional development, and materials development · In particular, develop, implement, and manage business language initiatives for the Title VI CIBER (Center for International Business Education and Research) grant; draft interim and summary reports as required; assist in management of the CIBER project budget · Serve as liaison to other University departments and offices, and, in particular, to the relevant language departments and units with international components · Plan and execute outreach activities with appropriate organizations outside the University community local, regional, and national · Represent the Lauder program on appropriate University and Wharton committees concerned with planning and implementation of business and professional language teaching and the incorporation of language skills and cross-cultural perspectives in international projects · Represent Lauder at language pedagogy and other relevant conferences; present papers and guide Lauder language faculty in choice of topics and presentation at same · Assist in planning public relations and promotional activities, particularly during the summer immersion programs abroad · Coordinate with the Institute$E2s Business Administrator to provide necessary documentation for hiring and/or compensating all non-U.S. personnel, for payments to overseas institutions, and for reconciling expenses by language faculty and summer program directors · Plan and manage budget for overall Language and Cultural Perspectives Program activities; develop budgets for proposed new programs, as required Qualifications: · MA/MS or higher degree in relevant field · Minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in teaching, curriculum design, and management of academic programs · Knowledge of proficiency-based language instruction and testing · Study or professional experience abroad and 2nd language proficiency · Ability to develop innovative and creative language programs · Excellent oral and written communication and strong computer skills · Ability to travel and work non-traditional hours, as required The University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia$E2s largest private employer, is situated on a beautiful urban campus, with easy access to a range of educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities.
