The specs say that there is a line level input, not a microphone
level input on the 17" iMac.  So I think you still need some
transformer/amplifier to plug in an external microphone.  This is
true of the 15" flat-panel iMacs that we have.  I am speculating that
the 17" iMac is the same in that regard.  I wish we could convince
Apple that we need a mic input, in addition to a line input (which
used to be available on Macs).
