I am not so sure the DV cameras are fragile.

I have sent two old Sony DCR-TRV8 cameras all over the world with faculty 
and although some of them come back a bit scratched, they still work.  The 
real advantage is the picture quality.  You can clearly see all the details 
that get lost in analog.

What experience have others had with digital cameras?
