I gained permission for the college library to use their database. All I need is telnet and a barcode reader. The patron records for the entire school are already in the system, and adding the item records is a breeze, even for unusual "material types" such as digital cameras, etc. All fines are handled by the library and the bursar. I would recommend asking for training using Carleton's library database, and they can also supply you with barcodes that fit in their number sequence. The trickiest step might be a diplomatic initial inquiry :) I would also make sure that the library tech services staff are satisfied with your work and/or have the ability to check your additions to the library database. Hope this was helpful.
