Thank you to all who wrote to say your colleagues use IME with no trouble to write katakana, hiragana, and kanji. It did turn out to be user error on our end. However, now we have a new wrinkle. We have many documents created with KanjiKit 97 (in Word 97) and, when, opened in IME 2002 (the edition for Office XP Home Edition) using Word 2000, are a mess.... the familiar array of "strange characters" and empty boxes. Can anyone shed light on whether there could be any way to display these documents correctly in the environment I've described? In case it matters, the Japanese Proofing Tools have been installed on the WinXP machine in question. Would we be smart to buy KanjiKit 2000 and open all of the documents with it first and save them in some way so that Word 2000 will recognize and display the characters correctly? Anyone familiar with the intricacies of KanjiKit 97 vs. 2000 or KanjiKit vs. IME? Thanks in advance! Carine Ullom St. Lawrence University
