Dear Hypothetical Lab Director, The police should be knocking on your door right about now. (Would you like fries with that bread and water?) Cheers! Semi-seriously, one of us should volunteer to be the John Scopes of copyright law (not me!). Earlier in a similar thread Read pointed out that unless we use and defend our Fair Use rights, they will wither. Does it take a test case to get a court's affirmation of those rights? Maybe IALLT should take it on. ;-) I point out again that a fellow professional organization, the Music Library Association has a written policy that is much more liberal that any ones that we use, and they feel they have legal justification for it. http://www.musiclibraryassoc.org/Copyright/ereserves.htm No one's ever bothered them, and since they deal with recorded music, I would think they'd be the first to get hit. Ursul..er, I mean, Hypothetical Lab Director, I realize you got a written denial of the right to copy, but perhaps it mightn't have been considered necessary to request them in the first place(?)
