I've recently purchased a JVC model, for personal use, and it's worked
wonderfully.  It plays PAL directly on an NTSC TV set.

There were several replys to a similar question last spring.

I believe it was David Herren who recommended the Malata DVD-N996 which
plays all DVDs as well as VCDs, SVCDs, CDs and MP3 discs.  I purchased
three and have no problems with them.
