Good luck!! Is the director a tenure-track or tenured professor? If so, how many other courses does s/he teach and what is the teaching load at your school? Or is this a full-time staff position? PP: I am a tenured full professor (I was an association prof when appointed). The normal teaching load at Furman is 5 courses per year (2 in the fall, 1 in our very short winter term, and 2 in the spring). I have a one course per term reduction, so my total teaching load is only two courses per year. This is not a staff position. 2. How is funding provided? Do you assess a lab fee per student? If so, is it for every course every semester? Do you also receive money from the Dean? PP: We grovel, get down on our hands and knees and beg, and moan and groan a lot! We have a standard operating budget, but when it comes time for equipment replacement, we have to make a special request--one which has been systematically denied for the past two years. I have written several grants, wheedled equipment out of other grants, and we have a very small endowment fund. We do not assess a lab fee per student (well, not that they are aware of. Furman just raises tuition every year.) We do not get money from the Dean without a lot of begging, and then only in small amounts (ex: an emergency repair to a projection system). 3. Do you have a full-time technology person that work there or is this a part of the director's job? PP: I do not have a full-time tech support person. Furman has employed one full-time person whose title is "Academic Computing Specialist for the Humanities" and he has to cover a lot of territory! I see him rarely. I need him often. 4. Do you employ student workers? How are they paid? PP: Yes, we have student lab assistants who are paid (minimum wage - %5.15/hr.) from Federal student employment funds. 5. Have you digitized your materials yet? How are you coping with copyright laws? PP: Yes, we have digitized some, but not all, of our audio programs. So far, requests to digitize materials have been granted. I have not yet run into difficulty with this. 6. What kind of check-out system do you have for hard copy materials? PP: We do not maintain any sort of library and do not have hard copy materials. Students can check out CDs, etc. and do so by leaving their student ID card with the lab assistant while they use the materials. When they surrender the CD, they get their card back. We do not allow any of our materials to leave the Language Resource Center. Videos can be checked out only by faculty. Students may watch videos in the lab (with the ID system).
