I run Office 2000 in a Windows 98 environment, and did the following to produce what you say you would like: 1) Pull down the Tools menu, and select "Customize". 2) Select the "Options" tab and click on the "Keyboard" button 3)Under the "Categories" menu, go all the way to the bottom and select "Common Symbols" 4) Under the "Common Symbols" menu, select, for example, lower-case a with an umlaut on it. 5) Click on the "Press new shortcut key" box, and hit simultaneously Ctrl+a. 6) Click the "assign" key, and go to the next umlauted vowel. I don't know if Windows 2000 has been so fundamentally altered that it would change this operation in the Office 2000 version of Word (that is fundamentally MS Word 97), but hopefully it hasn't. Hope it works! -- Jay E. Moore Hampton U. [log in to unmask]
