Major Duties: This position is located in the School of Language Studies. Working as a team with a department chair and other Language Training Supervisors, incumbents manage and direct language training programs. The incumbents recruit, train, develop, and supervise Language and Culture Instructors, who deliver job-related language training at all levels, beginning to advanced, to adult professionals from the Foreign Affairs Agencies of the Federal Government. The incumbents exercise professional language training skills to direct language training programs and materials development, which bring students to high levels of language proficiency in reading and speaking. The incumbents serve as technical advisors, by staying abreast of the state-of-the-art in the application of technology to the language learning process and current best practices in the areas of distance learning, classroom and computer-assisted instruction. The incumbents oversee the design of new courses and/or extensive revisions to existing training courses. They provide advice and assistance to the Department of State on language-related matters. They may manage groups of Language and Culture Instructors whose political, cultural, and religious differences make administrative and counseling efforts difficult and challenging. They monitor and evaluate students' progress and make interventions to maximize the effectiveness of the students' time in training. They oversee language proficiency evaluation in the languages supervised, both of current students and other U.S. Government employees. Qualifications Required: Basic Requirement: Applicants must have the required experience/education described below and meet the selective factors. Applicants must possess an academic degree (advanced degree preferred) that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours appropriate to the work of the position. Additional Requirements: In addition to the basic requirement, applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to work typical of the next lower grade for the position. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position. Further, specialized experience and/or course work that led to a related degree must include experience/study in at least four of the following five areas: 1. Learning theory, psychology of learning, educational psychology 2. Instructional design 3. Educational evaluation 4. Instructional product development 5.
