If you'd like that option, I'd consider 40 inches (about 1 meter) the minimum width. In addition to allowing students to use books and papers more easily, greater width makes the use of larger monitors more practical, and makes pair- and group-work more inviting. Finally, getting fewer computers into your available space sometimes makes it easier to afford adequate and up-to-date software and to upgrade or replace hardware on a more regular basis.
