Looking for a professional development opportunity to update your German teaching skills and
knowledge from home or school via the web? GOLDEN (German On-line Distance Education
Network), an interactive on-line teacher development project, sponsored by AATG, the Goethe
Institute and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln offers German teachers an innovative distance
learning course on "Reading Pedagogy for the German Language Classroom". GOLDEN's
interactive asynchronous learning environment allows participants to work individually, in small
groups and with instructors. The course runs from June 13 to July 20, and participants can earn
3 graduate credits from the University of Nebraska/Lincoln.
The Reading course will be taught by Ulrike Tallowitz and Adelheid O'Brien, University of British
Columbia. It focuses on studentsí development and improvement to read and comprehend
foreign texts most effectively, and also familiarizes course participants with recent literature
about reading in the foreign language classroom, thus relating theory to practice.
The course is divided into six Explorations in which participants will analyze and reflect on their
own classroom reading materials as well as a selection of reading texts from currently used
textbooks at middle schools, high schools and colleges plus supplementary reading material.
Participants will reflect on various instructional approaches to reading and analyze reading
comprehension exercises. A selection of current literature will give theoretical insights into the
reading comprehension and learning process itself so that teacher/participants can determine
the readability of texts, select appropriate reading material for their students and develop
adequate reading comprehension tasks so that students become more self reliant when reading
foreign texts.
The course is limited to 15 participants. Registration begins March 19 and ends June 8.
