Dear friends and colleagues in LLTI and IALL, Two days before Christmas I learned that I have colorectal cancer. (I'll spare you any comments about what a pain in the, well, you know...). I will be out of touch for a bit, as I have surgery and then radiation and chemotherapy coming up. I don't know when I will be back to my beloved LRC, but I hope it will be soon. I can hardly imagine what it will be like not to be here as the semester opens. Please think of me and send healing thoughts my way. If you pray, pray. If you don't, ring bells or chant things or light candles for me. I am unabashedly enlisting the support of the biggest network of positive power that I know. We've caught the disease early, and there's every reason to expect a cure, so don't think any gloomy thoughts, OK? I hope to see you in Houston in May. Pete and Jan and I were planning "The Farewell Tour" but I think we probably should consider renaming it. Don't respond to this message, and don't send me any e-mails, please. I will be away from my computers (if I can stand it) for a while, and I won't be able to get to any messages. And I don't think anyone wants to see repeats of this one in their e-mailboxes. Oh, and if you're around fifty and your Doc says "colonoscopy," do it! Apologies for any ickiness, and see y'all soon, Ursula -- Ursula Williams Director Language Resource Center http://www.nd.edu/~lrc 201 O'Shaughnessy Hall University of Notre Dame [log in to unmask] Notre Dame, IN 46556-5639 219.631.5881
