All participants were pleased with the production, although we wished there was more time for questions and answers (difficult during a two-hour session). In our post-videoconference discussion, we agreed to organize follow-up sessions to discuss our experiences and needs on our own campus. I would recommend purchasing the videotape: it is very useful for faculty, administrators, classroom designers, architects, audio-visual and computing personnel, and so on. (Perhaps you could ask your institution's media centre or library to add this to its holdings.) The video clips showing new facilities in three different universities were very instructive. Since we are now renovating classrooms to integrate technology, building new buildings, and constructing a brand-new language lab, we were especially interested in learning how others deal with the challenges we're facing. While everyone here said they learned something new, it was also heartening to see that we've been making many decisions consistent with the "best practices" cited in the program. Perhaps the best part of our experience was in getting together individuals from a number of academic and support departments who wouldn't normally meet. The necessity for this was emphasized in the videoconference and certainly illustrated at our local site. Especially valuable was that the support staff got to hear from the academic staff about how they teach and to gain some understanding of why this important pedagogically. On the other side, the academic staff got some insight into the problems facing support staff who must design and equip classrooms which meet the needs of a wide variety of teaching and learning styles. We're hoping that this will be the beginning of many more collaborative efforts. In the short term, we plan to present another workshop in which participants will get detailed information about the issues of classroom design raised in the videoconference. This will provide the foundation for the next step of devising classroom design guidelines appropriate to our campus.
