We are pleased to announce that the application for the 2023-24 cohort of the
Eric Eichler ’57 Fellowship for Health Care Leaders
is now available for Dartmouth undergraduates to complete.
The Eichler ’57 Fellowship is part of the Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations program. In an effort to develop a new method of training future leaders in healthcare, we aim to redefine
education and model new appreciation in daily work at the beginning of students’ healthcare training. American healthcare is facing unprecedented challenges that require a different method of developing expertise. The current approach continues to promote
a crisis of cynicism and demoralization that begins in the introductory stages of pre-health education. Newly initiated professionals begin their careers having let go of humanity somewhere in the broken process of their education. Through a new approach to
prehealth-education, we seek to disrupt this trajectory.
As interest in the fellowship has grown, it has become increasingly difficult to make selections across so many excellent candidates. In the spirit of fairness, and as we strive
to avoid introducing unnecessary self-doubt, we have intentionally redesigned our selection process this year. With so many outstanding candidates and up to 20 spots available, we have decided that a lottery process is the most equitable way to select our
fellowship cohort. All applications will be reviewed for thoroughness and to ensure eligibility for the fellowship prior to the lottery.
All materials must be received no later than
August 21, 2023, 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
Following the lottery, students who have been selected for the fellowship must attend a small group information session (via Zoom) prior to accepting the formal offer to join
the fellowship. This information session is an opportunity to meet the leadership team, get to know others selected for the fellowship, and ask any questions you may have about the fellowship.
Participating in the Eichler ’57 Fellowship is the equivalent of committing to an additional class throughout the school year. We encourage each applicant to consider their own
capacity in committing to the fellowship for this coming academic year. If you decide this is not the right year to participate in the fellowship, we encourage you to become involved in our community in a variety of other ways, including participating in events
offered through the Dartmouth Healthcare Foundation Society for Medical Humanities or applying for the fellowship in a different academic year. We would be happy to think through this with you. Please contact our team anytime at

Most events will take place on Wednesday during the 12 period or the last Wednesday evening of the month.
We envision the fellows learning about lived experiences of illness and experiences navigating healthcare encounters through their work with community partners.
