Biography for Governor Jay Inslee of Washington State
GOV. JAY INSLEE, a champion of CLIMATE CHANGE activism and current GOVERNOR of Washington, is coming to Dartmouth! For years, he
has been a compelling advocate for the Democratic Party and has shined as a beacon of hope and strength amid “the dysfunction" of modern politics.
As Governor of Washington, Jay has demonstrated immense success in and dedication to his mission as a public servant. He has prioritized
and advanced health care, access to education (across age groups), infrastructure, the minimum wage, and paid family leave. He also established in-state net neutrality and led the nation in overall personal-income growth, GDP, and job growth. Prior to his
election as Governor in 2012, Inslee served in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he led on clean energy issues and proudly voted for the Affordable Care Act and other progressive legislation.
CLIMATE CHANGE is THE top priority to Jay, who has “seen firsthand what’s possible when you invest in clean energy.” Confronting
climate change “has been the driving force” behind his public life, as he has demonstrated through his creation of a Clean Energy Fund and investment in electrifying the transportation system. While this is progress, Jay believes in “much, much larger investments
that will be sustained over time.”
“Confronting climate change will require a full-scale mobilization — a national mission that must be led from the White House. We
are the first generation to feel the sting of climate change, and we are the last generation that can do something about it.” Jay gets it— he recognizes the severe risk that climate change poses across the globe. “For millions of Americans, climate change
is no longer just a chart or a graph. It’s the smoke on our tongues from massive wildfires. It’s the floodwater invading our homes, and record-breaking hurricanes and heat waves.”
Governor Inslee will be on campus for a conversation with students about Climate Change and other key issues on Tuesday, January
22nd at 12:55 PM. The conversation will take place in the Faculty Lounge (through the top of the Hop, next to Alumni Hall— there will be signs!). Capacity is limited to 50 students so be sure to RSVP so you get a spot!!
