To the Dartmouth Community,

This letter is written on behalf of the Executive Board of Native Americans at Dartmouth, in response to the Op-Ed recently published in The Dartmouth titled “You’re not Tripping.”

We would like to express our solidarity with the 2018 Trips directorate and all of the communities and individuals who were affected by the harmful remarks made throughout the article. The women of color who have chosen to take on the responsibility of supporting this campus in creating a welcoming, inclusive environment for incoming first-years do not deserve to be publicly demeaned by someone invoking hateful and false rhetoric.

Firstly, the advancement of women and people of color is always deemed hostile for those who have historically held all power and entitlements. Just as there was push back when Dartmouth began to admit women, just as there was push back when Dartmouth denounced the Indian mascot, there was push back against a more inclusive and diverse trips directorate.

Secondly, misrepresentation and misquotation is a problem. People of color, especially femme identifying persons are not frequently present in media, and when they are featured, sadly, they are often depicted incorrectly. The Dartmouth should begin to reevaluate their practices in order to most accurately represent those they are interviewing.

In Solidarity,

Native Americans at Dartmouth
