Tuesday, January 30, at 4:45 p.m. in the Loew Auditorium, BVAC, for a lecture by internationally recognized artist Kader Attia.

Attia will discuss his work Reason’s Oxymorons, which is currently on view at Hood Downtown through March 18. The lecture will be followed by a discussion between Attia and Tarek El-Ariss, Associate Professor of Middle Eastern Studies, Dartmouth.

Attia grew up in both Algeria and the suburbs of Paris. Drawing from his experience of living within two disparate cultures, he has developed a dynamic practice that examines the intricacies of social, historical, and cultural differences across the globe. His work Reason’s Oxymorons is a research-driven video installation, consists of a range of interviews by Attia with philosophers, psychiatrists, anthropologists, traditional healers, historians, musicologists, patients, and immigrants. The conversations are organized around several themes centered on the ways in which non-Western and Western cultures approach psychiatric conditions and emotional breakdowns.
