Northern Stage's Production of Orwell in America
FREE Open Preview/Final Dress Rehearsal Performances

September 29, 30 and October 1 @ 7:30 PM

Maybe you heard, and maybe you haven't, but ORWELL IN AMERICA is premiering as a Preview/Final Dress Rehearsal Performance at the BENTLEY theater before going OFF-BROADWAY in the 59/E59 Theater this October! This is a remarkably exciting time and an incredible opportunity for both the Theater Department and theater community here at Dartmouth.

The play, written by Joe Sutton, directed by Peter Hackett, and starring Jamie Horton, all of whom are Dartmouth Theater professors, relays a fictitious journey of George Orwell to the United States, where a book tour reveals the struggles of his American readership to reconcile Orwell's socialist identity with the anti-totalitarian themes of his novels.

Interested in coming to the show but not an expert in Orwellian literature, Stalin, Soviet Russia, or post-war concepts of socialism? No fear! Join us for a pre-show panel discussion on Saturday, October 1 at 4:30 P.M. giving historical and political context to Orwell in America. Panelists will include Andrew Samwick from the Rockefeller Center, Dean Lacy, Chair of Government, and the playwright Joe Sutton. Post-war Europe, democratic socialism, Orwell himself, and other issues will be discussed in a lively conversation with Q&A to follow. Join in the discussion, and join us afterwards for the Final Open Dress rehearsal of the show before we move to New York!
