Fall 15, ENGL5: "Reading with Attitude" with Professor Christian Haines
Department of English
Dist: LIT; WCult: W

- Read classics such as Shakespeare's The Tempest and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, as well as exciting contemporary writing by Claudia Rankine, Jennifer Egan, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

- Consider questions such as what it means to be a monster, how digital media is changing how we read and write, what science fiction can tell us about society, and the ways in which poetry challenges our understandings of romantic love.

- Play videogames to learn how they are both works of art and complex cultural practices.

- Examine comics/graphic novels to explore how they use images to navigate the complexities of identity and history.

- Try your hand at creative writing by composing blog entries about contemporary social issues, experimental poetry, and short fiction.

- Meet other professors from the English Department, when they visit the class to describe how they developed a passion for the study of literature and culture.

- Design a final project that combines creative and critical components.
