Fall 15, ENGL5: "Reading with Attitude" with Professor Christian Haines Department of English Dist: LIT; WCult: W - Read classics such as Shakespeare's The Tempest and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, as well as exciting contemporary writing by Claudia Rankine, Jennifer Egan, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. - Consider questions such as what it means to be a monster, how digital media is changing how we read and write, what science fiction can tell us about society, and the ways in which poetry challenges our understandings of romantic love. - Play videogames to learn how they are both works of art and complex cultural practices. - Examine comics/graphic novels to explore how they use images to navigate the complexities of identity and history. - Try your hand at creative writing by composing blog entries about contemporary social issues, experimental poetry, and short fiction. - Meet other professors from the English Department, when they visit the class to describe how they developed a passion for the study of literature and culture. - Design a final project that combines creative and critical components.
