Film Events This Week:

Monday, February 23rd, 6-7pm: Dartmouth Film Society Meeting (Wilson 205)

You don’t have to be an expert - you just have to have an opinion!

Friday, February 27th, 7pm: Film Special: “National Gallery”
(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)
Introduction by Michael Taylor, Director, Hood Museum
Master documentarian Frederick Wiseman takes us inside the National Gallery for a privileged look that deepens our appreciation for art and its upkeep. Like many of Wiseman’s films (At Berkeley), it is a portrait of a place—its way of adapting to the digital age; its staff, who radiate knowledge and passion; and the paintings of Da Vinci, Vermeer and Turner (to name a few), which continue to raise fascinating historical questions about religion, aesthetics and society. D: Frederick Wiseman, US, 2014, Runtime: 181m.

Saturday, February 28th, 5pm & 8pm: Hop Film: “The Imitation Game”
(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)
Most don't know the recently revealed and utterly compelling history of Enigma code breaker Alan Turing, a genius who single-handedly saved the Allies by staying ahead of Hitler's every move. Benedict Cumberbatch is poised to earn his first Oscar nod as the brilliant, off-putting, yet vulnerable mathematician who's always the smartest person in the room—but doesn't play well with others. Keira Knightley co-stars as a gifted puzzle-solver and the best friend he so desperately needs. D: Morton Tyldum, US/UK, 2014, Runtime: 114m.

Sunday, March 1st, 4pm: DFS Film: “The Lion in Winter”
(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)
Katharine Hepburn earned one of her five Oscars for portraying the legendary Eleanor of Aquitaine. Even at Christmas, Eleanor and King Henry II (Peter O’Toole) can’t resist engaging in a battle of royal wits that pits elder son Richard (Anthony Hopkins) against his brothers, while the cunning King Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) has a few cards to play himself. Fueled by clever dialogue and rich history, this ruthless chess game reveals deep truths about love, power and the desire for both. D: Anthony Harvey, UK, 1968, Runtime: 134m.
