Film Events This Week:

Monday, February 2nd, 6-7pm: Dartmouth Film Society Meeting (Wilson 205)

The Dartmouth Film Society is a student organization that meets once a week to discuss the films playing at the Hopkins Center, debate important issues (like whether Ghostbusters is the best film of all time), write program notes, critique new movie trailers and vote on series proposals for future terms. You don’t have to be an expert - you just have to have an opinion!

Saturday, February 7th, 1pm: National Theatre Live in HD: “Treasure Island” (Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $10 for students)

Robert Louis Stevenson’s rousing 1883 tale of pirates, lost treasure and adventure is arguably one of the greatest works of storytelling in the English language. In the National’s thrilling new stage adaptation “Jim” is a young girl who opens the inn’s door to a terrifying stranger one dark and stormy night. At the old sailor’s feet sits a huge sea chest, full of secrets. Jim invites him in—and her dangerous voyage begins. Suitable for 10+ years. Runtime: 180m

Saturday, February 7th, 5pm & 8pm: Film Special: “2015 Academy Award-Nominated Shorts: Live Action”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

Short films may lack the scale and sweep of their feature-length siblings, but the best of them offer a promise of perfection in miniature and a reminder that cinema is often an art of patience, precision and detail. These bite-sized gems combine imaginative daring with meticulous attention to craft and are a surefire way to improve your odds in the Oscar pool. 117m.

Sunday, February 8th, 4pm & 7pm: DFS Film: “Beyond the Lights”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle) delivers a fierce performance as Noni, a young singer on the verge of superstardom. Shaped from childhood by her steely stage mom (Minnie Driver), she struggles for validity in an industry built on female hyper-sexuality and public perception. Lights strikes a risky, but successful balancing act between being immensely entertaining as a hip-hop romance and making dramatic, important statements about depression, self-worth and female empowerment. D: Gina Prince-Bythewood, US, 2014, 116m
