Tuesday, January 27th, 12-2pm: ID&E Film Presentation: “A Better Life”

(324 Blunt Alumni Center, Free and Open to the Public)

Brown bag lunch; beverages and dessert provided. A gardener in East LA struggles to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents while trying to give his son the opportunities he never had. This film is uncommon among Hollywood production in that it is set in a Hispanic community and features an almost entirely Hispanic cast. It is a great film to explore the culture and geography of LA. Father Greg Boyle of Homeboy Industries helped Director Chris Weitz and his crew with finding locations and making their film as authentic as possible. The language of the script was modified to reflect the actual slang used in Los Angeles, reflecting linguist differences from street-to-street. The New Yorker critic Richard Body wrote: “The story unfolds without hagiography, pity, or trumped-up heroism, as the filmmaker approaches the lives of everyday people with modest compassion and imaginative sympathy.” http://dartmouth.edu/events/event?event=32202

Tuesday, January 27th, 7-9pm: “EYEWASH: Jo Dery”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, Free and Open to the Public)

Included in this event is a sonic performance by Carlos Dominguez and Beau Sievers. Jo Dery is an artist who experiments with visual storytelling. She makes short films, little books, drawings, prints, and installation projects. Her short films have screened at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and the Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation. She has been awarded grants from the LEF Foundation, The Free History Project, and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. Her drawings and prints have been exhibited in Providence, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Berlin. She earned a BFA in Film/Animation/Video from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. She has completed residencies at the MacDowell Colony and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, as well as participated in an animation workshop at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Poland. After living in Providence for a decade, she relocated to Chicago to teach in DePaul University's Animation program for three years. Thursday, January 29th, 4pm: Lecture: “Gendering the Enemy in Soviet Films during the Early Cold War (1945-1955)” (Reed Hall 104, Free and Open to the Public)

Gendering the Enemy in Soviet Films during the Early Cold War (1945-1955)” deals with the
ways of producing otherness with help of gender discourse in international relations. He investigates cinematic representations of Soviet and American masculinities, femininities, families, and gender relations as a part of struggle for hearts and minds in international and domestic politics, which were exploited in creating external and internal enemies, in legitimating power, and in shaping gender orders in the USA and the USSR. His analysis includes films, film periodicals, and posters. Oleg Riabov is Professor in the Philosophy Department and director of the Center for Ethnic and Nationalism Studies at Ivanovo State University, Russia, and a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the University of Vermont (August 2014 – February 2015). Reception in Reed 212 following the lecture. http://dartmouth.edu/events/event?event=33019

Friday, January 30th, 7pm: Hop Film: “Citizenfour”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

In January 2013, filmmaker Laura Poitras started receiving encrypted e-mails from “citizen four”—Edward Snowden, who was ready to blow the whistle on the NSA’s massive covert surveillance programs. This 100% real-life thriller unfolds by the minute as Poitras and Snowden attempt to manage the raging media storm, forced to make quick decisions that will impact their lives—and the world’s. After seeing this film, you will never think about your phone, email, web browser, or profile in the same way again. D: Laura Poitras, US, 2014, 114m

Saturday, January 31st, 1pm: Met Opera in HD: “Les Contes d'Hoffmann”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $10 for students)

The magnetic tenor Vittorio Grigolo takes on the tortured poet and unwitting adventurer of the title of Offenbach’s operatic masterpiece, in the Met’s wild, kaleidoscopic production. Hibla Gerzmava, Erin Morley, and Christine Rice sing the three heroines—each an idealized embodiment of some aspect of Hoffmann’s desire. Thomas Hampson portrays the shadowy Four Villains, and Yves Abel conducts the sparkling score. Runtime: 226m. https://hop.dartmouth.edu/Online/met_opera_les_contes_dhoffmann

Saturday, January 31st, 7pm: Hop Film: “Top Five”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

Written, directed by and starring Chris Rock, this crowd-pleasing festival favorite tells the story of a jaded New York comedian-turned-movie star who wants desperately to be taken seriously. His encounter with a NY Times reporter (Rosario Dawson) forces him to confront the comedy career he's left behind. With cameos by Kevin Hart, Tracy Morgan, Whoopi Goldberg and Jerry Seinfeld, this smart, raucous comedy elicits deep belly laughs while drawing the audience inside the fame bubble. D: Chris Rock, US, 2014, Runtime: 101m.

Saturday, January 31st, 7pm: Hop Film: “Whiplash”

(Spaulding Auditorium, Hopkins Center for the Arts, $5 for students)

Young but deeply ambitious drummer Andrew (The Spectacular Now’s Miles Teller) attracts the interest of his elite music school’s fearsome jazz maestro (J.K. Simmons, Juno). An audition leads to a relentless and abusive dynamic that explains the film’s Sundance nickname “Full Metal Juilliard.” Even as the wunderkind’s knuckles bleed and he is pushed to the brink of both his ability and his sanity, you think: That’s some truly glorious noise he’s making. D: Damien Chazelle, US, 2014, Runtime: 106m. https://hop.dartmouth.edu/Online/hop_film_whiplash

Sunday, February 1st, 1pm: Met Opera in HD: “Les Contes d'Hoffmann”

Sunday, February 1st, 7pm: DFS Film: “All About Eve”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

One of the wittiest (and most cynical) films of all time, All About Eve is the only film in which four actresses were nominated for Oscars (the film earned a record 14 Oscar Nominations, which has been tied but not beaten). From secretary to understudy to starlet, an aspiring young actress schemes her way to stardom at the expense of her mentor (Bette Davis), who reads the signs but is powerless to stop her. This darkly funny tale of women competing in show business is as relevant as ever, as the value placed on youth will continue to pit women against each other. D: Joseph L. Mankiewicz, USA, 1950, Runtime: 138m. https://hop.dartmouth.edu/Online/dfs_film_all_about_eve
