This past month, the Palestinians have taken a number of actions at the United Nations to push forward their statehood ambitions. On Tuesday, December 30, the United Nations Security Council failed to approve a Palestinian resolution demanding an end to the Israeli occupation in three years. The next day, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas signed 20 international agreements, including the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which paves the way for the Palestinians to charge Israeli leaders with war crimes. The United States has deemed these measures counterproductive towards peacefully resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
