The Film and Media Studies Department's master classes give students the opportunity to meet acclaimed filmmakers in a small-group setting and learn more about their work and careers. Time permitting, students may also have the opportunity to receive feedback on their own work. This term, the department will be offering master classes with film editors Steven Hathaway (The Unknown Known and The Fog of War) and Woody Richman '92 (How to Survive a PlagueCapitalism: A Love Story, and Fahrenheit 9/11).

Steven Hathaway Master Class

Steven Hathaway's visit will coincide with the Hop's screening on January 24 (7 pm) of Errol Morris' newest documentary The Unknown Known(2013), a portrait of former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Hathaway has worked with Morris previously as an editor on Standard Operating Procedure (2008) and associate editor on the Academy Award-winning documentary The Fog of War (2003).

Woody Richman Master Class

Woody Richman '92 will present the Academy Award-nominated documentary How to Survive a Plague (2013) on January 29 (7 pm). Richman served as writer and editor of the film about a group of AIDS activists in the 1980s struggling for a response from the government to develop HIV/AIDS medication. Richman has worked with Michael Moore as an editor on Capitalism: A Love Story (2009) and Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) and as an associate editor on the Academy Award-winning documentary Bowling for Columbine (2002).
