1) Voices of Faith 2013 this Tuesday on November 5th!

Multi-Faith Conversations, a program of the Tucker Foundation's Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, is pleased to present Voices of Faith 2013, happening on Tuesday, November 5th at 6pm in Collis Commonground.  At this annual event, student panelists share their stories about the impact of faith and spirituality on their time at Dartmouth, and guests are invited to reflect on these stories while sharing their own thoughts over dinner conversation.  Panelists chosen from across campus include: Reuben Hurst '12, Anirudh Jayanti '14, Lauren Heywood '14, Andrew Nalani '16, and Eliza Rockefeller '17.

Student Workshop Description: 

In the first session of this two-part workshop, I will introduce some simple mindfulness practices that can train us to be more relaxed and alert, and I will ask participants to perform a short exercise that involves bringing mindfulness to their use of email or Facebook. 

In the second session, we will discuss what participants learned from the exercise and we will explore how to multitask in a more mindful way.

Interested in designing your own 10-12 month fellowship with a non-profit organization after graduation? You choose the location (U.S. or abroad), the organization & the social justice issues that you are most passionate about! The Lewin application deadline is February 15, 2014 – but NOW is the time to start planning & contacting organizations!! Advising appointments are *required* & we’d love to brainstorm ideas with you, share information on past Lewin Fellowships & help you start the application process.

4) Funded Spring Service Fellowship in South Africa! Info Session: Wed 11/6 @ 6 PM

Looking for a meaningful way to spend 14S? Interested in working with the youth of a township in South Africa? 

Kliptown Youth Program is a youth empowerment organization in a township in Soweto, outside of Johannesburg. The fellowship will send TWO students to work in the youth program for spring term. Fellows will tutor students ages 5-15 in English, assist in teaching computer skills courses, work one-on-one with older teens on college applications & serve as mentors to support KYP’s overall mission of empowering youth through educational support & afterschool activities. Join us at our info session to learn more about the program, the application process & to hear from 3 students who spent last spring working with KYP in Soweto!

5) Shanti celebrates DIWALI, The Hindu Festival of Lights!!

DATE: Sunday, November 3, 2013

Free & open to all!


PROGRAM:

3.30-4.30pm: Hindu Puja at Rollins Chapel (seating starts at 3.15)

4.30-5.30pm: Lighting Lamps on Dartmouth Green (6000 lamps!!! :)

6.00-7.30pm: Cultural Program at Alumni Hall in Hopkins Center (seating starts at 5.45)

7.30pm: Indian Vegetarian Dinner in Alumni Hall


Our celebration at Dartmouth seeks to unite the traditional aspects of Diwali while including the larger Dartmouth community. The event is a four part celebration beginning with a traditional puja in Rollins Chapel, then a celebration on the Green with the lighting of lamps, and then a Cultural Show at Alumni Hall in the Hopkins Center, followed immediately by a home-cooked vegetarian dinner. This year, the Cultural Show will feature performances by community members as well as by Raaz and Vandana, Dartmouth's South Asian Dance Troupes.

7) “Has technology made God obsolete?” with Meteorologist Mary Alice Rose

"Has technology made God and spirituality obsolete?" Come to a free talk by Mary Alice Rose on Sunday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m. in 105 Dartmouth Hall. Mary Alice Rose has worked as a meteorologist for the National Severe Storms Laboratory, and managed the development of the ground system for the Hubble Space Telescope. She has since transitioned to a career as a Christian Science practitioner, teacher, and speaker. This talk is co-sponsored by the Christian Science Organization at Dartmouth.

9) White Ribbon Campaign with the Center for Gender & Student Engagement

The White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) is a worldwide effort of men ending violence, particularly violence against women. Wearing a white ribbon is a symbol of opposition to violence and a “personal pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls.”

10) Hands on Global Development with GESI at Northwestern!

GESI is a unique, credit-bearing program that combines experiential-learning, study abroad, cultural immersion, and international work experience at dynamic, community-based organizations. 


The Global Engagement Studies Institute (GESI) at Northwestern University will equip you to:

•       Work directly with local communities and community organizations in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, India, South Africa, or Uganda 

•       Live with a host family and immerse yourself in another culture for eight weeks

•       Work in teams of undergraduates to design and implement a development project in microfinance, social enterprise, education, environmental sustainability, global health, and more
