To the Dartmouth Community,

On Monday, May 27th the Greek Leadership Council met with the chapter presidents of 27 Greek organizations to pass the ‘Greek First Year Safety and Risk Reduction Policy.’

In an effort to create a safer environment for incoming freshmen while mitigating the related risks that Greek organizations assume when hosting freshman, beginning fall 2013 freshman will be permitted in Greek houses only during GLC-approved substance-free events between the return of Trips Section A (August 30 in 13F) and the Monday after Homecoming weekend (October 14 in 13F).

The GLC and its sub-councils – spearheaded by the Inter-Fraternity Council – have met extensively with chapter presidents and members of the Greek system to address questions and concerns about the implementation of this policy. Additionally, the GLC has met and will continue to meet with members of the college administration including but not limited to the Office of Student Health and Wellness, the Dartmouth College Health Improvement Program (DCHIP), and the Office of Residential Life regarding this policy. It is our hope that this policy will incentivize and support dry and alternative social events – particularly those reaching out to freshmen – both inside and outside of the Greek system.

In an effort to promote transparency and avoid confusion as this policy is implemented in the fall, a “sparknotes” version of the policy, as well as the policy in its entirety, are attached.

Though this policy has received the support of the administration, we would like to emphasize that this policy is a student-led initiative. The GLC believes that this policy represents a proactive step towards creating a safer and stronger community for all Dartmouth students. We ask for your understanding and support moving forward.

Sincerely,

The Greek Leadership Council
