Dickey Center is organizing a seminar tomorrow with Dr. Benn Steil, on Bretton Woods. Dr. Steil is senior fellow and director of international economics at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He recently published a book entitled "The Battle of Bretton Woods".

As you might know, Bretton Woods was the venue of the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference in 1944 (immediately before the end of WWII). Prominent economists and politicians representing most of the world powers met at the Mount Washington Hotel, Bretton Woods, NH to discuss the "post WWII world order". As a result of the conference, the IMF, World Bank etc were established. The countries also agreed to a pegged exchange rate regime with most foreign currencies pegged to the USD and the USD pegged to Gold. Dr. Steil will talk about the "actual story" surrounding the historic Bretton Woods accord, including the "drama, intrigue and rivalry" that happened during the conference
