In the midst of an All-New England basketball career and All-Ivy baseball career, Jim Beattie, class of '76, was drafted to the New York Yankees in the fourth round of the 1975 MLB draft. Traded to the Seattle Mariners in 1980, Beattie retired at the end of the 1986 season after a successful 9-year MLB run in which he earned a complete game in his 1978 World Series defeat of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
After earning an MBA from the University of Washington in 1989, Beattie rejoined the Mariners, spending six years directing the Mariner's minor league system. In 1996, Beattie was named as General Manager of the Montreal Expos, and in 2002 he transferred to the Baltimore Orioles, serving as GM and executive vice president of baseball operations. From 2008-2010, he worked as a financial adviser for Alliance Bernstein, after which he returned to baseball in his current position, as a Major League scout for the Toronto Blue Jays. He is also involved in the Upper Valley Special Olympics and is the director of this year's Winter Games.
His wife, Martha Beattie '76, earned a Dartmouth Alumni Award in 2010 after a 30 year career as a math teacher, crew coach, and volunteer leader. She now serves as vice president for Alumni Relations.
